Homemade sliced white bread unwrapped and wrapped in floral beeswax wrap

Amish White Bread

This is my favorite go-to bread recipe and is the one everyone asks for. This is the same loaf that I often sell at the market and I'm happy to share it with you so you can make it in your own home.

Equipment

  • 2 Loaf Pans (I prefer glass but have used metal. Purcahse link in notes)
  • 1 Large Bowl
  • 1 Measuring cups and spoon

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Warm Water (110° F)
  • 2/3 Cups White Sugar
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoon Active Dry Yeast
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/4 Cup Vegetable Oil
  • 6 Cups Flour (All-Purpose or Bread Flour, either works great)

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, add water, sugar and yeast. Give it a little stir and let it proof until creamy and foamy, about 10 minutes.
  • Mix in salt and oil.
  • Mix in flour 1 cup at a time, mixing until nearly fully incorporated before adding the next cup.
  • Knead dough until smooth.
  • Place in a well oiled bowl, cover and let rest until doubled (Approx. 1 hour)
  • Punch down dough, knead 3 or 4 times in the bowl, then divide the dough in half.
  • Shape into loaves and place into well oiled loaf pans. Allow to rise for 30 minutes or unitl dough has risen 1 inch above the pans.
  • Bake at 350° for 30 minutes.
  • Immediatley remove from pans and place onto colling rack to cool before slicing. I usually run a butterknife along the egdes just to break suction, and then flip the pan upsidedown on the racks to remove the loaves.
  • Enjoy and be sure to let me know how it turned out for you!
